Types of product photo

  • Product photo on a white background: shows the product without distraction for catalogue and e-commerce pages.
  • Photo in use: shows how the product sits in a space, on a machine or in the user’s hand.
  • Machine, line and facility photography: for quote documents, the website and trade-fair materials.
  • Corporate portraits: management and team photos for the website, press and LinkedIn.

On-site shoots for industrial products

Machinery, moulds and large products can’t be moved to a studio. In that case, lighting and backdrop equipment is set up at the factory or warehouse where the product is. The shooting area is prepared in a part of the site that won’t affect production, and the product is cleaned before the shoot.

Corporate portraits and team photos

Management and team portraits are used on the website’s About page, in press releases and on LinkedIn profiles. Portraits are shot at the office or facility with the same backdrop and lighting, so new people can be added with the same look as the team grows. A time when staff are available for the team photo is set in advance.

Consistency across catalogue series

In multi-product work, every product is shot with the same lighting set-up, framing and colour settings. That way catalogue pages and e-commerce listings match when they sit side by side. If the series will grow later, the set-up details are recorded and new products are shot the same way.

Background clean-up and retouching

Selected shots go through colour correction, and small flaws such as dust, scratches and reflections are cleaned up. White background and shadow editing is added to the scope if requested. For technical products, accuracy of dimensions and colour comes first; retouching doesn’t make the product look different from what it is.

Delivery formats and file naming

Files are delivered in separate folders: lightweight for the web, high resolution for print. File names follow the product code or a scheme you choose, so the photos can go straight into your site and catalogue. For online selling across your own site and marketplaces, see our e-commerce consulting page.

Planning film and photography on the same day

If a factory film is being shot at the facility, the photo shoot can be scheduled for the same day. One trip to the site, two separate outputs from the same preparation. On the Bellona Piranlar job, the commercial and the showroom and shop shoot were done within the same scope.

The product photo shoot process

Four stages; your approval is obtained before selection and before delivery.

  1. ScopeNumber of products, angles, background choice and uses (web, catalogue, print) are set.
  2. ShootingA series is shot where the product is or in a suitable space, with the same light and framing.
  3. Selection and retouchingSelected shots are colour-corrected, cropped and cleaned up.
  4. DeliveryFiles are sized, named and organised into folders according to where they’ll be used.

Frequently asked questions about product photography

Should we send the products to you, or do you come to us?

For small, portable products a suitable shooting space is arranged. For machinery and large products the crew and equipment come to your facility; the decision depends on the size and number of products.

How many products can be shot in a day?

It depends on product size, number of angles and background changes. Once you share the product list, the number of days needed is shown in the quote.

Are white background and shadow clean-up included?

For catalogue and e-commerce work, white background and shadow editing can be added to the scope; which shots it applies to is decided at the start.

Who holds the usage rights to the photos?

Where the photos will be used and whether raw files will be delivered are set at the quote stage.

Do you come to the factory to photograph machines?

Yes. We go on site for machine, line and plant photography; health and safety rules and confidential areas are agreed before the shoot.
